An island paradise

A DFL's experiences on South Island.

'DFL', as most islanders know, stands for 'down from London'. Like many overners I dreamed of escaping to the island for many years before finally getting lucky with a timely redundancy and early pension in the spring of 2008. Within weeks the missus and I were ensconsed in the holiday caravan we'd owned for some years, leaving our (adult!) kids in South London. The 1979 Suzuki GS850 came with us; my British bikes had to wait until I'd tracked down a lockup garage but they're over here now.

Having been in love with the island since my first visit some 50 years ago I wondered if reality would match my dreams and sure enough, it didn't – it far surpassed them. For a transport obssessive the Isle of Wight is a glorious place to be. What follows is a random collection of jottings and snapshots from island transport shows and my wanderings among the vast selection of transport that rolls, flies and floats south of the Solent. Enjoy.
